Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Performance & Test Drive

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Overview

Maruti Suzuki surely made a wise decision by launching the Ciaz sedan. It not only gave them an opportunity to compete with the Honda City but also helped them to up their ante in the premium market of our Country. The Ciaz became quite popular in our Indian market, and it even went on to steal the spotlight from the popular Honda City. Now it’s been quite sometime now that the mid-size sedan has been launched in the Indian market while its biggest rival already received a facelift for the year 2017 now it’s time for MSIL to add their updates to the Ciaz to keep things fresh at their end.

Maruti made a bold move by deciding to sell the Ciaz via their premium Nexa dealerships. Now the reports state that Maruti will be launching the facelift Ciaz in the coming months with the focus mostly on cosmetic updates and some updates to the feature list. While the launch is on the cards, do not expect Maruti to hike the price extensively to stay in the competition. View offers on Maruti Cars from Maruti dealers in Hyderabad at Autozhop.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Style

The Ciaz has been around for almost four years now and with all the fresh competition around, it was starting to look a little long in the tooth. With the update, Maruti has made a bunch of changes to make the Ciaz more upmarket. Starting with the front, the Ciaz gets a new grille that connects both the headlamps. There are chrome strips adorning the grille since we are a chrome loving janta. The new headlamps look fantastic and are now equipped with LED projectors and day time running lamps. The fog lamps are LEDs too and they too get a chrome garnish.

The sides remain the same barring the new dual tone, 16-inch precision cut alloy wheels which give the Ciaz a very sporty stance. The rear gets LED combination lamps and more chrome. Overall, the Ciaz definitely looks more contemporary now and this shot of Botox has given it at least two more years before Maruti Suzuki can bring in the next-gen Ciaz.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Space

While Maruti has retained the basic layout on the insides, it has made subtle changes that make quite an impact. For starters, the dash gets a new Birch blonde wood grain insert that runs across the dash and the doors. While most wooden finishes end up looking tacky in everyday cars, we must say Maruti Suzuki has a done a great job. It looks and feels premium and matches well with the black and beige combo. The other major change is the instrument console which looks fantastic and gets a bunch of new features. The most important addition is the 4.2-inch multi-information coloured TFT display just like in the Baleno. The screen shows various read outs like the hybrid drive operation, average fuel economy, total driving and idle time, acceleration and brake graphs and more. The new-look tacho and speedo with the black background looks good and is easy to read too.

The infotainment system remains unchanged and is one of the easiest to operate in the business. A host of connectivity options along with Apple CarPlay and the Android Auto make life extremely easy. The music system however leaves a lot to be desired especially if you are an audiophile. The front seats remain unchanged which is a good thing because they are extremely comfortable with good support all around. The legroom at the rear continues to be the highlight, but we still wish for better under-thigh support for more comfort over long journeys. Maruti has done a good job with updating the interiors and the Ciaz feels much more welcoming than before.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Engine

Maruti will carry over the 1.4 Litre Petrol unit which powers the pre-facelift variant while the diesel variant, on the other hand, is powered by the 1.3 Litre unit. Both the drivetrains are paired to a five-speed manual transmission while a four speed automatic unit is also available with the petrol variant. The petrol unit is capable of producing about 91 Bhp of peak power and 130 Nm of torque the diesel variant, on the other hand, produces about 89 Bhp of peak power and 200 Nm of torque. There were reports that Maruti might add a new 1.6 Litre diesel unit to the lineup as well which powers the S-Cross diesel Crossover. This powerful diesel engine offcourse will be available in a slightly different state of tune and will power only the top end trims. For more info on Maruti Suzuki Ciaz visit

The 1.3 Litre diesel variant gets Suzuki’s SHVS mild hybrid tech which helps in making it one of the most fuel efficient diesel car available for sale in the Indian market. The petrol unit on the hand is not too far behind. The diesel variant promises to return around 28.09 km to a litre while the petrol variant promises around 20 km to a litre.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Driving

Maruti claims to have made changes to the suspension of the 2018 Ciaz. Not to say that it was uncomfortable earlier but the changes make the ride even plusher for the passengers. We could easily feel it during our stint with the new model and it rides well for the most part. It is only on really bad roads and deep potholes that a thud could be felt inside the cabin. The suspension setup is very apt for the Indian road conditions but this also takes a toll on the handling. Body roll is considerable and no feel and feedback from the steering makes matters worse. It simply refuses to weigh up at high speeds and centre at low speeds but the good thing is that the car feels planted. The stopping power from the front discs is good and the brakes a fine job of bringing it to a halt within a short distance.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Safety

Maruti Suzuki has gone ahead and updated the safety package of the 2018 Ciaz. The new systems on offer are speed alarm and seatbelt reminder for the front passengers. The speed alarm beeps every 60 seconds above 80 km/hr and starts beeping constantly post 120 km/hr. ABS with EBD comes as standard and there are still only dual front airbags. This is disappointing as its competition like the Hyundai Verna and Honda City offer up to 6 airbags. The automatic variants are installed with Electronic Stability Program (ESP) for when the car begins to swerve around and Hill Assist. Not much needs to be said about the automaker’s service which has proven itself to be excellent.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Conclusion

The Maruti Ciaz was in no way different from any other car from the company in terms of value. The 2018 model takes this trend a notch higher with more features and a powerful yet efficient petrol engine. It is now even more comfortable and is perfect for those looking for a congenial ride on a budget. It is, however, not a fun-to-drive car which is a huge deterrant if you are not the chauffeur driven types. The 1.5-litre petrol engine does give the 2018 Ciaz a fresh breath of air and even comes with a mild hybrid technology. Taking everything into account, the 2018 Ciaz is an even better value-for-money proposition than before and ticks all the right boxes to be a good family sedan.
