Suzuki Baleno comes in eight petrol variants and four diesel versions. The USP of Maruti Suzuki Baleno is that now it complies with BSVI emission norms on all its engines and comes with a 1.2L Dual Jet Dual VVT engine. It comes in beautiful colours. The top-notch Baleno features make it a premium hatchback and thereby, one of the best selling family cars in India today. Three of Baleno variants come with a continuous variable transmission system. The beautiful exterior appearance and its plush interior make Baleno one of the most sought-after models from Maruti Suzuki.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Style

The highlighting feature of Maruti Suzuki Baleno cars is its sporty look. A glance at Baleno images shows a unique and extravagant appeal. Its wide stance makes it appear like a big car. However, it has modest specifications. The Baleno length is 3995mm whereas its width and height are 1745mm and 1510mm respectively. Its wheelbase of 2520mm makes Suzuki Baleno an extremely stable car. Baleno ground clearance of 170mm is better than that of other hatchbacks in its segment. It is not a high ground clearance, but can still sail over obstacles on the roads.

Its angular headlights complement the beauty of this car. The robust grille with the Suzuki symbol presents an imposing sight. Some of its variants come with attached fog lamps whereas the base models have provisions for the same. Specific Baleno models come with black alloy wheels. However, the characteristic features present in all Baleno variants are LED rear combination lamps and rear parking assist sensors. Baleno comes in six beautiful colours, such as Magma Grey, Nexa Blue, Pearl Arctic White, Premium Silver, Phoenix Red, and Autumn Orange.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Space

The new Baleno’s interior gets an all-black treatment, giving it a very European flavour. Though, given its rather simple, large panelled dashboard layout, we felt a second, lighter colour might have broken the monotony in some places. But, the general vibe that the cabin exudes is one of premium construction and materials.

The centre stack carries into the cabin the same flowing lines of the exterior. The top trim variants of the petrol and diesel engine models get an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and a 4.2-inch colour TFT monitor. The display, which pretty much converts into your Apple iPhone, sits on top of the centre stack and the automatic climate control is set right below. The top Zeta and Alpha trim variants of the Baleno get a lot of equipment, auto headlamps, LED daytime running lights, window glass that cuts UV rays, a multi-information TFT speedometer display and auto dimming rear view mirror.

But, the lower trim variants also get some decent specs with stuff like front power windows, ABS with EBD, dual airbags, seat-belt pretensioers and force limiters and tilt steering being offered as part of standard fitment. However, the CVT variant is fairly Spartan presumably to keep the final price still competitive. The variant doesn’t get any more equipment other than the standard package. For more details on Maruti Suzuki Baleno check Iftr2015hyd

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Engine

Built on a completely new platform that sees extensive use of high tensile steel, the new Baleno is about 100 kgs lighter than the traditional steel monocoque and about 26 kgs lighter than the Swift’s body in white. But it is still a sub-four-metre hatch, so it can’t get the lower tax benefits unless the engines also stick to the rules. So, it gets the K12 petrol engine and the DDiS 190 diesel engine. In fact, the powertrains are both from the Swift, with the only difference being that the K12 petrol engine gets an additional CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic gearbox in the Baleno.

The engines have also been carried forward in the same state of tune. So, the K12 petrol engine featuring VVT (variable valve timing) tech, generates the same 84.3PS of peak power and 115Nm of peak torque. Of course, the gear ratios have been changed in this and in the diesel engine. The diesel is the same DDiS 190, essentially the Fiat Multijet engine. It generates 75PS of peak power and 190Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm.

Both the engines are peppy, responsive and refined. The best part about the K12 petrol engine is its entirely vibration-free, refined performance. NVH levels have been superbly well-contained. Yes, you do hear the DDiS engine inside the cabin, only to a point of being able to recognise that it is a diesel, but it never gets intrusive. The CVT is a bit buzzier and the engine tends to rev-up in a hurry, though the gearbox is more fun in sport mode. Its regular drive mode is clearly oriented towards fuel efficiency.

The diesel powertrain is the one that is very workable on the road. The Baleno’s lighter weight helps it break into a gallop easily, without the ride at anytime seeming to get unsettled. There is almost no turbolag too, with enough torque available from about 1200 rpm. The ride quality of the Baleno is most standout feature. The suspension is nicely sorted with a firm, determined ride over bad roads. There is no throwing about or rattling and there is a sense of solidity that we felt is a first for a Maruti hatch.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Driving

The ride of the Baleno car is good. But where NVH is taken into account, the engine and tyre noise does enter the cabin at high speeds, which results in poor ride comfort at highway speeds. For city driving, it?s quite good as the suspension absorbs all the bumps with ease, making it a smooth ride. On the other hand, the handling of the Baleno is slightly more evolved than the Swift. The light weighted chassis not only enhances the power and efficiency, but also improves the driving dynamics. The steering wheel too is light and feels comfortable to drive in city. It does weigh up a bit, making it a joy to drive on the highways too

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Safety

Baleno cars come with high-quality suspension, such as Macpherson Strut for the front wheels and Torsion Beam for the rear, to ensure that its passengers get an uneventful driving experience, even on bumpy countryside roads. Baleno tyre size of 195/55R16 is ideal for a hatchback of this size. Ventilated disc brakes on all wheels prevent skidding on slippery roads. A manual handbrake makes it possible for Baleno cars to remain stationary while parking as it prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards.

All Baleno variants come with dual airbags for driver and front seat passenger. Rear sensors with camera allow you to park your Baleno without any problems. ABS and EBD provide incident-free braking as it prevents skidding of the wheels when you apply sudden brakes. An engine immobiliser system proves handy because no can operate the engine without inserting the vehicle’s keys into the ignition. Other safety features include child safety locks and a central locking system.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno Conclusion

The Baleno competes against Hyundai Elite i20 and the Honda Jazz. Overall, it is the cheapest of the three, and the most fuel-efficient, as per ARAI fuel economy ratings. Similarly equipped and equally practical, but is the only one to get a fancy driver information system as part of the instrument cluster. Apart from two shortcomings ? poor ride comfort and worst in class warranty – the Baleno is actually worth buying.
